Frequently Asked Questions

How long have you been building custom homes?
While Dean Cathey has been in the home construction industry for 40+ years, Dean Cathey Custom Homes has been actively building in the Lake Ray Hubbard community for nearly 30 years.
How much does it cost to build a house?
All homes are different. We'll put a custom budget together for your luxury custom home preferences.
Is there a particular style of home that Dean Cathey Custom Homes specializes in?
We have built log cabins, refined contemporary, traditional, mid-century modern, farmhouse, zero lot lines, commercial office buildings, restaurants and just about everything in between.
Is there a minimum square footage that you will build?
Not really. We have built homes from 1,500 to 10,000 square feet. We do it all.
What is the current price per square foot to build?
Given the economy's ups and downs, it's hard to put in writing an exact number. However, given our active association in the Dallas Builder's Association and the Texas Homebuilders Association, we keep our price per square foot in line with the competitive environment we build in and on par with the custom budget we construct for you.
How long does it typically take to build a custom home?
We are often at the mercy of Texas weather, but typically, it takes approximately 6-8 months to build a custom home to our standards.
We want to build on acreage. Can you help us find that?
Yes, we are often asked this question. We have multiple connections in the real estate industry as well as personal connections -- especially in the Lake Ray Hubbard Community.
What are your quality standards?
We use only the finest materials on the market, alongside design methods to provide you with the most efficient home. Some examples of this include 2 x 6 exterior walls and foam insulation.
Do you only build in Rockwall, Texas?
While many of our homes are built in Rockwall, Hunt and Kaufman counties, we've gone as far as Prosper and Mineola, as well as Tawakoni and Mount Pleasant.
Do you have an architect and/or an interior designer you can refer me to?
Yes! We have a list of recommended architects and designers should you need them, or we can work with anyone you bring to the table on your own.
Can you help with the financing piece of the home building puzzle?
Yes, we have a short list of financial institutions we recommend and have experience working alongside (some for more than 20 years) to make your dream home a reality.
How does the financing work when building a custom home from the ground up?
We can refer you to our financial partners to help you craft a finance plan that works with your particular situation, be it cash buyer, needing interim financing, or long-term financing.
Do you have a list of references we can call?
Absolutely. We will be happy to share that list with you when we sit down with you at our first meeting.
Do you have the necessary certifications to build in Texas?
Many residents, especially those moving from other states, may be surprised to find out that builders are not required to be licensed in Texas. However, the lack of a license does not mean there are no rules of the road. However, much of the work on a home is performed, designed and inspected by licensees. Licenses are required for electricians, HVAC contractors, and plumbing contractors. Only specialty contractors, including HVAC, fire sprinkler systems, plumbing, and well drilling/pump installation specialists, need to be licensed in Texas. As a member of the Dallas Builders Association trade association and listed as an A+ company on the Better Business Bureau, Dean Cathey Custom Homes is accountable to our industry as well as our customers.
Are you VA certified?
Yes.
